Course Title:  Topics in Information Systems Technology

Prerequisite: None

Course Description:

This course covers various topics in information systems management or the management of information systems. Topics covered will vary upon the research interest of the department. Students will acquire skills for developing a research proposal. The focus of the course will be announced in advance and the course syllabus will made available for student review.

This course will familiarize students with major research streams and key research domains in the management of information systems. The thematic focus of the general area is on the management of the computing resource. Specifically, the course looks at behavioral, social, and organizational issues dealing with how computers are adopted and used by individuals, how organizations structure the information function, and how personnel for systems professional work and knowledge work can be supported and managed. The range of computing activities being studied covers: mainframe computing, client-server and network computing, end user computing, and individual or knowledge work computing.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to: 

  • Define and describe essential characteristics of the major themes(s) covered in the course 
  • Discuss, in oral and written form, key theories and intellectual currents underlying the domain(s) of study
  • Discuss, in oral and written form, the literature that has been advanced in these domain(s)
  • Present a cogent argument, in written and oral form, for the importance of a selected research area in one of the knowledge domains of the course and articulate a proposal for studying this research area
