Students must make sure that the class will transfer back to GSU as an equivalent to a course in their degree program; typically this is done by submitting a syllabus to the Office of Graduate Admissions & Student Services. Additionally, in the case of transient status, the other institution has to meet the accreditation standards for acceptable credit. This is handled by the admissions and registrar staff.
Students must meet the appropriate regulations at BOTH schools to be approved to take a class as a transient student (this includes prerequisites.) Once a course has been attempted at GSU, students may not receive degree credit for the same course from another institution. A grade of 'W' is considered an attempt.
Transient Status
A student is considered a Transient when temporarily attending another college or university with the intention of transferring course credit back to GSU for degree credit. In this status you cannot be enrolled at GSU simultaneously. There are several reasons a student might seek transient authorization. For example, a student who will be living away from campus for a semester (going home for the summer is common) and wishes to take a course while away from GSU would need to seek transient approval.
Students must submit a transient application and, in many cases, a syllabus for each course. An adviser reviews the student's file, checking prerequisites, residency requirements, GPA minimums, and so forth. If approved for transient status, a copy of the transient application is sent to the host school and the student.
Students are responsible for having an official transcript sent to the registrar's office after completing the course(s) taken while in transient status.
