In today's highly competitive global environment, the effective deployment of information technology has become the key to organizational success. There is a continuing shortage of individuals with the combination of business and technology skills needed to develop and manage information systems that provide competitive advantage in the global marketplace. The mission of the CIS major in the B.B.A. program is to produce graduates able to fill this need. Students will learn how to combine their general business knowledge with the latest software engineering tools and techniques to create information systems needed by today's organizations. Graduates will be prepared for careers in a variety of areas such as programming, systems development, database administration. network deployment and support, and consulting.

The Department of Computer Information Systems cooperates with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in offering a concentration in information systems associated with the degree Bachelor of Science with a major in mathematics. This program is described under the offerings of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the "College of Arts and Sciences" chapter of this catalog.

Required Major Courses: These requirements were under review at press time. For the most up-to-date information, check the CIS Internet site at http:www.cis.gsu.edu for the current requirements. The Office of Academic Assistance also can provide information about these requirements. In addition:
(1) transferred programming courses must be equivalent to programming languages taught at Georgia State; and
(2) students may take CIS 4980 only after completion of all required 3000-level business core and CIS courses.

Other Required Course: Math 2420 before any upper-level CIS course is taken. This course can be taken in Core Area D or as a College of Arts and Sciences elective.

Other Requirements:
(1) Transfer credit toward the CIS major courses may not be more than five years old at the time the student enrolls. Students who reenroll after an absence of more than two years may retain major credit only for course work that is less than five years old at the time of reenrollment; this includes GSU credit and transfer credit.
(2) Transfer credit is not granted for CIS 3260.

Certificate of Excellence in C/C Programming: CIS majors who earn at least two grades of B and one grade of A in the three courses CIS 3260, CIS 3280 and CIS 3290 are eligible to receive a certificate documenting their accomplishment upon graduation. Students should contact the Department of Computer Information Systems for more information about this certificate.

Certificate of Excellence in Internet Development: CIS majors who earn at least two grades of B and one grade of A in the three courses CIS 3260, CIS 3270, and CIS 3295 are eligible to receive a certificate documenting their accomplishing upon graduation.
