Robinson Career Success Stories

Dan Ratanasit: MS CIS Alum 2007

Undergraduate & Graduate Education:
Bachelors Computer Engineering, Auburn University 1998
MS Computer Information Systems, GSU 2007

Current position title and a brief overview about your work and your role in your organization:
Software Developer. I work at the UPS corporate office in their Global Treasury Department where I do software design, implementation and testing. Our main responsibility is the Global Treasury Intranet Portal used by UPS employees all over the world to keep up with the company's cash management.

How did you find your current position?  What role did networking play (if any)?
I found the job through networking. A classmate, Wenyi Wu was currently an intern at UPS and referred me to the company. They hired me as an intern and once I graduated the company offered me a full time position.

In retrospect, what do you wish you had done differently while you were going through the program?
I would have done a master's thesis. My GRA research was in IT and accessibility for disabled computer users which I could have used as the basis for a thesis.

What is the best advice would you give current Robinson students about career preparation and planning?
Search for internships. Expand your network through classmates. Make sure you communicate clearly and effectively verbally and through your writing.

I chose to attend Robinson because...
of the high quality education at an inexpensive price.

My favorite things about Robinson are…
High quality of education. Focus on research. National recognition and reputation

Even though most people land their job through networking, how did Robinson's Career Management Center help you in your career planning?
Allison Jacobs helped me by giving me valuable advice on improving my resume.

My favorite professor is...   Why?...
Upkar Varshney, William Robinson and David Coyle for being so enthusiastic about the subject matter, and for genuinely wanting us to learn and get the most out of their courses. Dr. Varshney in particular for using his great sense of humor to create extremely enjoyable lectures.

My long-term professional goal is…
To continually build my skills in developing professional interpersonal relationships, and to experience as many different facets of a business as I can to understand it inside and out, rather than from a single perspective.

Outside of work, what's important to you?
My family. As far as hobbies, I love listening to, writing and playing music. I play guitar and sing in a band, but also dabble in bass guitar and the drums. I also enjoy reading, watching movies, and travelling.
