John Simpson Undergraduate Managerial Sciences & Real Estate Major
Undergraduate & Graduate Education: Georgia State University, Robinson College of Business, Atlanta, GA Bachelor of Business Administration in Managerial Sciences and Real Estate, December 2007
Current position title and a brief overview about your work and your role in your organization: I am a Project Consultant with Draper & Associates. Draper & Associates is a consulting firm focused on formulating and implementing solutions to a wide range of business and management challenges. I have been assigned to the Atlanta Housing Authority engagement, and in that role I am providing contract administration support on behalf of the Real Estate Management (REM) Division. I am responsible for assisting with the day-to-day management and oversight of both internal and external contracts on behalf of the functional areas of the REM team. I am also responsible for supervision of AHA's facility management contract, providing oversight of the third-party vendor responsible for maintenance, upgrades, and capital improvements throughout the AHA headquarters building.
I chose this job over the others I was offered for several reasons. First, to be honest, the compensation package they offered me is fantastic! Second, I will use both my Management and Real Estate degrees. Third, there is a great company culture that I fit well with. And fourth, I believe there is great opportunity for me to grow into project management or other management positions.
How did you find your current position? I found my current position through the Robinson Career Connection. I learned of the Career Center through the weekly emails that I began receiving in 2006. Through these emails, I learned of RCC, posted my resume and began job searching using this tool. I checked RCC multiple times a day, submitted my resume to every job I was interested in, went on every interview I could, and eventually, was offered this job through Draper & Associates.
What is the best advice would you give current Robinson students about career preparation and planning?
I would advise students to do the following
- Get your resume reviewed by the Counselors in the Robinson Career Management Center
- Go on every interview that you can. It is great experience and will give you more poise and confidence when it really counts! You will have been asked and answered almost every question imaginable by the time you have an interview with a company you are interested in and therefore will be very prepared.
- Use RCC. I did not search on any other site and have now received two great jobs through this search engine (I also had a great part-time job when I was still in school that I found through RCC).
- Talk to professors that you know about the jobs you want and are considering. I spoke with Professor Deane about Draper & Associates and he was able to give me some great information and advice.
