Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What qualifications must I possess in order to participate in the Robinson Executive MBA Program?

A. EMBA candidates should possess a minimum of seven years of work experience, including five years of managerial responsibilities. Our students have superior track records, demonstrating a certain level of achievement and increased responsibility in their careers. In addition, our students have demonstrated the ability to handle executive-level responsibility.

The ability to perform well in a graduate business program is another criterion for our students. To a large extent, this is measured by grade-point average and GMAT scores.

Q. What other characteristics does the Admissions Committee look for in a student?

A.The EMBA Admissions Committee is looking for a diverse group of individuals to participate in each class. A variety of factors are taken into consideration, including work experience, grade-point average and GMAT scores. In addition, prospective students are asked to participate in interviews with the director and assistant dean.

Students are carefully chosen for the contributions they will make to the overall educational process. Each student possesses a unique set of skills and experiences that collectively creates a quality learning environment.

What this diverse group of students has in common is a successful record of work experience and a clear potential for managerial advancement.

Q. Should I have a certain type of management experience?

A. Often our students' five years of management experience fall within the areas of policy planning, budgeting, human resources or operations. Professional experience and employment involving specialized, creative or research functions (requiring decisions based on personal judgment) and unique educational and leadership training may also be considered.

Q. What other traits should I possess?

A. Some of our students hold advanced degrees in disciplines other than business. A number of our students are entrepreneurs, while others expect to advance to top corporate management positions within a few years. Ultimately, a quality they all share is a willingness to take risks and work hard to achieve professional goals.

Q. Do I need a particular background to participate in the program?

A. EMBA students come from a wide spectrum of backgrounds, including such industries as finance, health care, public utilities and manufacturing. The service industry, government agencies, not-for-profit agencies and the public sector are represented as well as privately and publicly held companies of all sizes. Many students serve in specific functional areas and are seeking to fill gaps in their formal management training in order to enhance their leadership potential. The diversity of experience and specialties within each class enriches the learning process.

The average age of our student is 39, with 17 years of work experience, including 10 years of management responsibilities.

Most importantly, our students are willing to commit to succeed in a four-semester program of study.

Q. How does the Executive MBA Program differ from the other MBA programs offered by the Robinson College of Business?

A. The EMBA Program is specifically designed for experienced executives and managers. It is a more structured program with a lock-step format. There are no electives. Everyone begins the program in August and graduates 16 months later in December. Subject matter is integrated, rather than being taught as separate disciplines. This integration magnifies the entire learning experience and is more easily achieved in a lock-step format. The format also facilitates the formation and work relationships of study teams.

In addition, the Executive MBA Program is a full-service program. The EMBA staff members handle student registration, book purchases, and meal and parking passes—allowing the students more time to concentrate on their studies.
