Overview:
This course focuses on IT vendors and on the contracts with these vendors, based on the assumption that most projects involve outside and third-party vendors whose services must be contracted for and who must be properly managed in order to achieve successful project outcomes.

Topics include deciding when to make vs. buy, creating requests for proposal, evaluating potential vendors, structuring outsourcing contracts, contractual vs. relational governance, establishing service level agreements, and dealing with cultural challenges in offshore sourcing.

A significant amount of class time will be spent analyzing projects through experiential management exercises and project examples. Both individual and team exercises are used. Participants will develop a project reporting process that will increase the likelihood of project success.

Participants Will Learn to:

  • Evaluate various sourcing options
  • Develop a request for proposal (RFP) and manage the vendor selection process
  • Manage relationships with vendors and understand the difference between
    contractual vs. relational governance
  • Articulate the key elements of a good contract
  • Identify the risks and benefits associated with offshore outsourcing and how these arrangements can best be managed
Who Should Attend:
  • Managers, project leaders, and others who want to improve their ability to
handle the challenges of project outsourcing
  • Program managers and general managers with significant oversight responsibilities for projects
