Overview:
The rising popularity of virtual worlds has been rapid. The Gartner Group and Forrester Research have predicted wide-spread adoption of virtual worlds by active Internet users within five years. Virtual worlds, like Second Life, Kaneva, and There.com, are becoming valuable business tools. Major companies such as CNN, CBS, BP, and IBM are investing heavily in virtual-world technologies.

The appeal of virtual worlds is that they allow "avatars" to cross over into virtual spaces that support a range of social interactions. In this way, they have proven to be quite versatile, embracing varied activities key to business including marketing, communicating, and training.

Virtual worlds eliminate time and space constraints. From a financial and technical perspective, a global meeting of participants from Atlanta, Moscow, London, and Pretoria is now feasible. From a marketing perspective, virtual worlds are another channel for reaching new global consumer markets. From an R&D perspective, virtual worlds foster a creative environment for innovation.

Virtual worlds are in their infancy. Recent development in graphical interfaces, CPU architectures, high-bandwidth communication, and virtual world standards, all bode well for the future of this mode of communication and collaboration. This workshop addresses these emerging developments.

Participants Will Learn to:
  • Develop a virtual world business strategy tailored to their organizations' structure
  • Investigate best practices for building and implementing a virtual presence
  • Identify organizational risks and challenges associated with a virtual world presence
  • Interact with each other "in-world," utilizing key features of second life
Who Should Attend:
Senior leaders, business architects, managers, emerging technologists, and professionals whose responsibility it is to ensure their organizations' technological leadership.

    Faculty:
