Victor Essoka

Victor Essoka was brought up to believe three things: if you work hard and stay humble, good things will happen; to be successful means becoming a doctor or an engineer; and if you are serious about being successful, you must have a U.S. education. Victor has achieved all three. (read more)

Sound the Alarm - U.S. Official Brings Fiscal Wake-Up Tour to Robinson

See What's New at the Career Management Center

David Walker, Comptroller General of the United States, will lead a group of representatives from the Concord Coalition in an open forum on America's fiscal crisis, particularly as it relates to Social Security and health care. Walker has been featured recently on several news and entertainment programs including “60 Minutes,” CNN’s “Situation Room,” and the “Colbert Report.” Known as the "Fiscal Wake-up Tour,” the forum also consists of representatives from the Brookings Institution, the Heritage Foundation and the Concord Coalition itself, the organizing body for the effort. This group has been touring the United States, primarily at leading colleges and universities, carrying the message that if reform of Social Security and health care does not take place soon, younger Americans (that’s many of you!) will suffer the consequences much more so than their parents or those nearing retirement age.

The Fiscal Wake-up Tour forum will be held at the University Center on Monday, October 1 beginning at 5pm and will continue through 7pm. Dr. Patton and Dean Huss will make remarks prior to the event. A free dessert reception will be held before the event, and dessert and further networking opportunities will be available afterward.

In our newest feature, Robinson Business Beat asks faculty members to share their top book recommendations for graduate business students. Our first contributor is Professor and Marketing Chair Ed Rigdon. Dr. Rigdon’s research on interactive marketing and on the statistical methodology of structural equation modeling (SEM) has been published in leading marketing and research journals. He is a co-founder and frequent contributor to SEMNET, an email discussion list devoted to SEM, which now has 1,900+ subscribers located in 50+ countries.

What I’m Reading Now:

The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable
by Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Taleb’s observations and warnings about confirmation bias, wildly nonnormal distributions, the seductive power of narrative, and other factors that can lead to substantial errors in judgment are immediately relevant to my research and teaching, and also in my role of key decision-maker for my department. Taleb’s life has been very different from mine—his stories and essays open my eyes to a different world.

Books I Recommend:

The Case Study Handbook: How to Read, Discuss, and Write Persuasively about Cases
by William Ellet

Students often feel lost when they encounter a case method course for the first time—or even for the second time. Ellet’s book is readable and incisive, giving students a view from the inside out and a cohesive set of strategies for dealing with cases that many instructors would probably have trouble evoking.

Marketing Metrics: 50+ Metrics Every Executive Should Master
by Paul W. Farris, Neil T. Bendle, Phillip E. Pfeifer, and David J. Reibstein

This is a wonderful guidebook to help students and managers focus on key metrics when trying to understand how a business is succeeding or failing. This book belongs on every executive’s bookshelf. For students, it is a useful companion to Ellet’s case study book.

Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk
Capital Ideas Evolving
both by Peter L. Bernstein

Bernstein’s books are lively treatments of fundamental concepts of risk and risk management. Against the Gods traces concepts of probability and risk through Western intellectual history, while Capital Ideas Evolving tracks recent developments related to tools like the Capital Asset Pricing Model and the concept of market efficiency. Both books are full of interesting characters, and the latter book includes Bernstein’s personal anecdotes and intimate sketches of Nobel Prize-winning economists.

Moby Dick
by Herman Melville

The story of the Pequod is exciting in itself and holds lessons for managers in organizations. Melville experimented with outside-the-box literary formats while reporting a fictional case study of an organization with a serious agency problem.

The fastest growing segment in the workplace is women executives. Unfortunately, recent studies have shown that the attrition rate for women who are exiting corporate America is equally high, but women who have a mentor are more likely to continue their work progress, both in the workplace and in the community.

Robinson’s Women’s Mentor Program prepares women business students to become future business leaders by linking them with senior mentors who are interested in sharing their knowledge and experience with the next generation.

Who can be a mentee?
Only female graduate students in the Robinson College of Business who do not graduate before May of the following year are eligible to participate in next year's program. All mentees must make the commitment to communicate with their mentors by phone or email and to be flexible when scheduling meetings.

What are a mentee's responsibilities?
A mentee's role will be to

  • Take responsibility for bringing job and career issues to her mentor for discussion;
  • Give the mentor as complete a picture as possible of her situation and concerns;
  • Prepare for each meeting by planning what she would like to discuss; and
  • Listen to and act upon feedback about herself and her career options.

How does the selection process work?
Interested mentors and mentees will submit applications to the program. Mentors and mentees will be matched based on backgrounds, interests, and interviews.

To apply online, click here.

College News

CIS Department Second in the World in Published Research Citations -- In a study just published in Communications of the AIS, the Computer Information Systems Department in the Robinson College of Business was ranked second (only to M.I.T.) in the world in the “number of citations . . . published in . . . premier journals [in the period] 1990-2004” by faculty researchers in the department. Published citations by other authors are often considered the best indicator of the impact and significance of academic papers. Three members of the CIS faculty, Eph McLean, Detmar Straub, and Daniel Robey, were among the top 12 authors cited in the study. On the same list, the University of Georgia was ranked ninth and Emory University, 40th.

Robinson Profs Receive National Science Foundation Grant -- The National Science Foundation announced that it is funding a collaborative research project between Georgia State and Penn State. The project is to revise and enhance the methods being used to teach information technology classes at the undergraduate level. The $705,000 grant will be divided between the two universities in an effort to transfer and adopt Penn State’s AESOP Program—Augmenting Education of Systems-of-Systems Professionals—to Georgia State. The success of this project will address two major business and industry concerns. First, it responds to the demand for more highly trained IT professionals to meet growing industry job opportunities. Second, the program addresses today’s critical need for IT employees with the ability to solve problems creatively, to think independently, and to be productive members of interdisciplinary teams. Vijay Vaishnavi, Richard Welke, and Faye Borthick will be leading the team at Robinson. For more information, click here.

College Receives Grant to Help Improve Business Education in Egypt -- Higher Education for Development (HED), in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID/Egypt), has awarded $400,000 to Robinson for a university partnership designed to help improve the quality of market-oriented business education in Egypt. Led by Bijan Fazlollahi, faculty from Robinson’s School of Accounting, the Department of Risk Management and Insurance, and the Department of Finance will assist in updating the curriculum at Cairo University to meet the needs of the business community.
