Several film courses taught at Georgia State University use feature film footage for practice projects. Furthermore, some students may wish to capture video or audio to include in their class presentations. In addition, a student may wish to import a music track so that he/she can create a mock music video. All of these uses of copyrighted materials are legal.

The US Constitution specifically states that copyrighted materials may be used for non-profit, educational purposes, such as practice projects, farce, satire and/or art.

The US Supreme Court has ruled that making mixes of copyrighted music is legal, so long as the producer has paid for copies of each song and does not attempt to sell the disk. Duplicating an entire CD, VHS or DVD is illegal. Offenders can be prosecuted by the Federal authorities.
