Branding a Lifestyle

Since then, he’s had many additional responsibilities in operations and other areas, rising from managerial positions with VF subsidiaries to group vice president of VF and eventually president, chairman, and CEO. He’s also shared his expertise as director of Wachovia Corporation and the Hershey Corporation. Through it all, McDonald has stayed true to his original passion for managing brands. That passion has translated into a sound position for VF for the future.

“I feel good about where we are,” McDonald says. “We’ll continue to implement tools and processes to understand consumers, acquire new brands in lifestyle areas that are growing in importance, and search for new ways to translate knowledge about lifestyles into a better product.”

However, ultimately for McDonald, passion without vision is not enough. “The real measure of a leader,” he says, “is to develop a vision of what you’re trying to accomplish, where you’re going. You can have all the passion in the world, but without the vision, you won’t end up in the right place.”

Mackey McDonald’s Leadership Keys for Success
1. Develop your vision
2. Assemble a diverse, global team to implement that vision
3. Expect the unexpected and respond with timely, appropriate action
4. Bring both art and science to your work
5. Follow your passion
