INCREASING RATE OF FORECLOSURES UPSETS ATLANTA
Atlanta foreclosure rates are among the highest in the nation. Many around the country see Atlanta as the beginning of what’s to come in other cities. Rajeev Dhawan, director of Robinson’s Economic Forecasting Center, has been studying the characteristics of loans on homes that are in foreclosure. He told the New York Times that his preliminary analysis of data from April shows that nearly half were for adjustable rate mortgages and many were issued in the last two years.

HALLIBURTON ACCOUNTING PRACTICES UNDER FIRE
HALLIBURTONA complaint by a former employee alleges that Halliburton Co. used improper accounting to “distort the timing of billions of dollars in revenue.” According to a story in the Houston Chronicle, there are questions about how the company determines when it’s appropriate to book revenues. J. Mack Robinson Distinguished Professor of Accountancy Lawrence Brown told the Chronicle that system has “huge problems.” Brown reviewed the flowchart at the Chronicle’s request and said that it omits many of the criteria needed to make a proper decision and is vague in other places. “Halliburton could have had a much clearer document,” he said.

HOSPITALITY LEARNING CENTER OPENS AT GEORGIA WORLD CONGRESS CENTER
What happens behind-the-scenes at some of the nation’s top trade shows? Now hospitality students from Robinson’s Cecil B. Day School of Hospitality will have an opportunity to find out through the new Georgia State University Hospitality Learning Center at the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC). The Hospitality Center is the first partnership in the nation between a hospitality program and a major convention center involving an actual on-site classroom. It will be the site for School of Hospitality classes as well as professional development programs involving a variety of hospitality sectors. The state-of-the-art classroom features multimedia instructional support, including cameras that will allow viewing of activities taking place in exhibit halls and throughout the GWCC campus. This technology will provide real-time learning for students and participants and will enhance the School’s tradeshow, meeting, and event management courses.
