The Vision to be the Best

Page 1

IT starts with a vision. To be the best, there needs to be someone at the top who believes in possibilities. For the Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) Department at the Robinson College of Business, that someone was Kenneth Black Jr., who in 1953 led a handful of young and innovative scholars to build one of the country's premier programs.

Steeped in a tradition of education, research and partnerships with the business community, Robinson's RMI Department is one of the largest and most comprehensive centers of risk management education. In addition to undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs and certificate programs in personal financial planning and enterprise risk management, it boasts two of the world's top research centers - the Center for Risk Management and Insurance Research and the Center for Enterprise Risk Management and Assurance Services (CERMAS).

And today, Black's vision continues.

In 2003 the department celebrated 50 years of excellence and honored the contributions of Black and those who followed in his footsteps as chairman of the department - John W. Hall, Steve Kellison, Bruce A. Palmer and Harold Skipper. With each chair, a new milestone was met, and the department has been consistently ranked among the top three in the nation by U.S. News and World Report for the past six consecutive years.

However, while Black's vision to be the best continues, the challenges have changed.

"A revolution is taking place in the risk management profession that has a direct effect on the research and educational needs, " said Sanjay Srivastava, current chair of Robinson's RMI Department. "Analytical advances have provided an unparalleled opportunity to quantify risk and study the complex interactions between the providers and the consumers of risk management services. "

According to Srivastava, academic research has been deficient in meeting this demand.

In response, the faculty and staff of Robinson's RMI Department have developed a multifaceted strategic plan that would position Robinson as the world's intellectual leader in the science of risk management.
