Ph.D. specialization in Strategic Management

Program Overview
Students admitted to this program major in Managerial Sciences with a specialization in Strategic Management. Those who pursue this degree are interested in management at the highest levels of the organization. Of particular interest is understanding how top managers create and maintain competitive advantage for their firms and create value for firm stakeholders. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to, competitive strategy, corporate strategy (diversification), strategic decision making, innovation, strategic change, and entrepreneurship.

Students develop a solid grounding in the foundations of strategic management research through participation in a set of core seminars. They then customize their knowledge to their particular interests through a focused set of directed readings courses coordinated with faculty members. Typically, students take 30 hours of seminars and directed readings, and 15 hours of research methods and design.

The Faculty
The Ph.D. in Strategic Management program faculty is accomplished in both research and teaching, and represents a variety of research interests.

Dr. Asli Arikan (Assistant Professor) – Dr. Arikan earned her PhD from The Ohio State University. Her research interests include corporate strategy, with special emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, alliances and management of investment, technology and innovation.

Dr. Pamela Barr (Associate Professor) - Dr. Barr earned her Ph.D. from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests include strategy formulation and change with an emphasis on the role that cognitive processes play in these activities.

Dr. William Bogner (Associate Professor) - Dr. Bogner earned his PhD from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.  His research interests include organizations learning, knowledge management, technology strategy and cross-cultural management.

Dr. Irene Duhaime (Professor) - Dr. Duhaime earned her Ph.D. from University of Pittsburgh. She holds the Carl R. Zwerner Chair of Entrepreneurship and Family Business. Her research interests include corporate strategy and the management of family-owned enterprises.

Dr. Denis Grégoire (Assistant Professor) – Dr. Grégoire earned his PhD from the University of Colorado at Boulder.  His research interests include opportunity acknowledgement and the cognitive processes associated with strategic and entrepreneurial action.

 

Dr. Karynne Turner (Assistant Professor) – Dr. Turner earned her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh.  Her research interests include organizational controls and firm capabilities with a primary emphasis on the cognitive processes associated with the management of knowledge.
