July 25, 2002 (Atlanta) - The Robinson College of Business announced today the inauguration of The Carl R. Zwerner Prize in Business Ethics. Named for business leader and Robinson alumnus, Carl R. Zwerner, the award will recognize master's-level students who demonstrate great potential for success in the global business environment based on ethical conduct, integrity and community involvement.
"As one of our most active and generous alumni, Carl, along with his wife, Jane Mary (a trustee of the Georgia State University Foundation), have helped us build one of the nation's top business schools," said Robinson Dean, Sidney E. Harris. "At a time when lapses in business ethics are front page news; this award serves as a reminder that true business success must be measured by sound moral principles and business acumen."
Each year, students involved in activities associated with the College's Ethics courses will have the opportunity to apply for the award. Nominees will submit essays highlighting their career aspirations, the importance of integrity and ethics in the conduct of business, and a summary of a project completed by the student that focuses on the ethical conduct of business.
"Our intention is to use this prize to recognize students who personify the importance of integrity and ethics," said Zwerner. "Ethics has always been the soul and foundation of business longevity -- and to all other functions of our lives. That is why we maintain that business is what we do and ethics is who we are."
Winners will be selected from the College's Executive MBA (EMBA) and Flexible MBA programs. Each recipient will receive $7500 and will be recognized at the College honors celebration. In addition, they will serve as student ambassadors focusing attention on ethics in the marketplace and will be invited to attend College events that will help them in the development of their future career goals.
