July 3, 2003 (ATLANTA) Dr. Roy D. Johnson, assistant professor in the Computer Information Systems (CIS) department at the Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, has been awarded a half-million dollar Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The GAANN fellowship will support four Ph.D. students in the College's CIS department for three years each.
"There is intense national competition for these grants with less than one third of the proposals being funded," said Johnson. He also noted that "because the grants support underrepresented groups, GAANN fellows are ideal candidates to provide models and mentors for other minority students in CIS and all of higher education."
GAANN fellowships assist minority graduate students with excellent academic records who demonstrate financial need and plan to pursue the highest degree available in any designated area of national need including Biology, Chemistry, Computer and Information Science, Engineering, Geological Science, Mathematics, and Physics. Each grant consists of stipends paid to fellows for subsistence, tuition, fees, and certain costs.
Stipends consist of up to $21,500 to defray education costs. Additional support will be provided by Georgia State resulting in a 25 percent match of the federal grant funds.
Robinson's CIS program is ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the top ten programs in the nation and by Computerworld among the top 20 "Techno-MBAs" in the country.
The J. Mack Robinson College of Business is one of the nation's top business schools. The College's Flex (part-time) MBA program has been listed in the top ten by U.S. News for the past eight years and its undergraduate business program is ranked among the top 50 in the nation. BusinessWeek magazine ranked the College's Executive MBA program 20th in the world and Forbes rated Robinson in the top 20 for return-on-investment for regional schools. Georgia State University's Robinson College of Business has an enrollment of more than 8000 students and is located in downtown Atlanta.
