July 15, 2004 (Atlanta) Benjamin M. Oviatt, professor of managerial sciences and director of the Herman J. Russell Sr., International Center for Entrepreneurship at the Robinson College of Business, has received the 2004 Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS) Decade Award. The presentation was made at the Academy of International Business meeting in Stockholm.
Oviatt, along with co-author Patricia McDougall (Indiana University and former faculty member at Robinson) received the award for their article "Toward a Theory of International New Ventures." The article, published in 1994, described and explained the historically accelerated internationalization of start-up companies. Following its publication and along with other articles by Oviatt and McDougall, international new ventures became a legitimate area for research. The article also helped establish the broader arena of international entrepreneurship as an important area of academic inquiry.
The JIBS Decade Award, sponsored by Palgrave Macmillan publishers, is designed to recognize the most influential article published in JIBS 10 years ago. The unanimous selection of this year's award-winning article by a committee of international business scholars was made from among the most cited articles published by JIBS in 1994.
Following the award presentation, Oviatt and McDougall delivered a paper providing a current view of their original work which will be published later this year in a special section of JIBS.
