Robinson Students Take First Place in Competition

April 22, 2005 (Atlanta) – A team of six undergraduate accounting students from the J. Mack Robinson College of Business won first place in the Sixth Annual KPMG-ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting) Regional Case Study Competition held in Miami earlier this month. The team will compete in the national competition in August.

Charles Fuhr, Henna Noorani, Elizabth Nunes, Matt Sooy, Michael Ericson and Emmanuel Munyaneza competed against teams from Florida State, the University of Miami, the University of Southern Florida and the University of Central Florida. Each student group made a 20-minute presentation of their case and solution to a panel of judges comprised of two KPMG partners and one individual from ALPFA.

"The experience was exhilarating," said Fuhr, a junior majoring in accounting and leader of the group. "We put a lot of preparation into the presentation and met five or six times before the competition to plan and prepare. It was great working with such a hard working and dedicated team. I'm sure we'll do well in the national competition."

The competition presents accounting students with the challenge of resolving real-world accounting issues. It also provides students with the opportunity to work with KPMG professionals to better understand the demands and rewards of the accounting profession while networking with finance and accounting professionals from across the United States.

Teams were evaluated on the overall quality of the presentation, identification of relevant accounting issues, support for their recommended solution, demonstration of teamwork and responses to judge's questions.
