Record Crowd Turns Out for Fiscal Wake-Up Tour
October 3, 2007 - (ATLANTA, GA) - More than 400 people turned out for the Fiscal Wake-Up Tour hosted by the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University. The national tour, a joint initiative by The Concord Coalition, the Brookings Institution, and the Heritage Foundation and led by U.S. Comptroller General David Walker, has been touring the country to discuss the nation's looming fiscal crisis.
With an eye towards influencing the dialogue in the 2008 Presidential election, the tour is visiting college campuses, service organizations, and newspaper editorial boards across the country making multiple stops in early primary and campaign battleground states including Iowa, New Hampshire, California and Florida.
Armed with facts and figures the panelists illustrate how Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid--the three big entitlement programsaffect future federal spending and the economy. The bi-partisan group admits that while they may not agree on the solution, they do agree that there is a problem.
As a result of meeting with Walker for a feature article in the College's State of Business magazine, Robinson Dean Fenwick Huss invited the Comptroller General to bring the tour to Atlanta.
"This is a vital issue that impacts every person and every business, and we felt it was an important dialogue to bring to our students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community," said Huss.
In addition to Georgia State, the Fiscal Wake-Up Tour has visited the campuses of other renowned schools including Duke University, The University of Chicago, and The University of Texas at Austin.
